Sleep quality decides how the second and third day of a trip go. A good pad matters more than a good bag, because most of the cold you feel at night is conducted into the ground beneath you, not lost to the air.
Inflatable pads pack small and insulate well for their weight, which suits backpacking and hike-in hunts. Camp mattresses and SUV air mattresses trade packability for genuine comfort and make sense whenever you are sleeping within reach of a vehicle.
Pair any pad with a blanket or bag rated below the lowest temperature you expect. Ratings are survival ratings, not comfort ratings, so build in a margin of about ten degrees if you sleep cold.
